home 26th Annual 'Meditation For World Peace' (An Interfaith Gathering)

What:
As part of the 26th Annual Meditation For World Peace, the Rime Buddhist Center, 700 W. Pennway, Kansas City, Mo., will host an interfaith peace gathering on Saturday, Dec. 31 at 5:30 a.m. The program will consist of religious observances from various faith traditions. Prayers for peace will be offered by each of the 15 faith traditions represented on the Greater Kansas City Interfaith Council. A highlight of the event will be the presentation of the Bodhisattva Award to the Rev. Sam Mann. For 40 years, Sam served as the beloved pastor of St. Marks church and as an advocate for his community, working tirelessly to feed the hungry, house the homeless, train the unskilled and help minority entrepreneurs open businesses. In 2004 he founded the St. Mark Child and Family Development Center to provide child care for “welfare to work” families. The Center serves 225 very low and low income families and provides child care, early childhood education, before- and after-school programs and summer camp programs. In addition, he helped organize the first National Urban Peace and Justice Summit to address gang violence. State greetings will be given by The Honorable Dr. Charles B. Wheeler, former Missouri State Senator. Former Mayor Pro Tem Alvin Brooks will give community greetings. The keynote speaker this year will be Ira Harritt, who has been the program coordinator of the Kansas City Office of the American Friends Service Committee since 1986. In that capacity, he has organized programs on conflict resolution, social and economic justice, opposition to war and promotion of peace. This year’s event is endorsed and co-sponsored by the Greater Kansas City Interfaith Council, and the American Friends Service Committee - Kansas City Program. The event is free and open to the public. Please arrive by 5:30 a.m. (starting at 6:00 a.m.) and bring canned goods for Harvester. The Rime Buddhist Center is a non-sectarian center dedicated to the cultivation of wisdom and compassion.
